How did you get into opera?

"I was first introduced to opera in 2013 when my music teacher at Hastings Boys’ High School put up a poster about a new local youth initiative called Project Prima Volta (PPV) on our class wall. Out of curiosity, I decided to go and audition and was accepted. I learned so many things about myself, my voice and being on stage. I was given many opportunities to perform with my friends, have free lessons from international artists and be a part of a fully staged opera. I was given little roles and met amazing people from around the world. With encouragement from my family, friends and loved ones I decided to take this singing thing further and study. Every year, I grow to love and appreciate classical music and singing."

What has been challenging, unexpected or enjoyable during your singing career?

"Singing in general - learning how to sing is challenging, unexpected and enjoyable."

What are your goals for the future?

"I see myself in a year auditioning and finding a school or university to complete my Masters in the U.S. In three to five years to be accepted into a Young Artist programme. In 10 years, I see myself performing around the world and loving life."

What do you hope to get out of Lexus Song Quest?

"I hope to learn. Learn from this experience. To be given an opportunity to perform on the big stage with prizes that can be life-changing for us is incredible. I know this competition has helped many singers in the past and boosted their careers and I would love to be a part of the history."

Who inspires your practice? Do you have any creative influences or heroes?

"My family, my mum. My mum raised six of us in New Zealand to give us the ultimate opportunity to be whatever we wanted. I took that chance to be a singer. At first, she wondered if this singing 'thing' was temporary and I should eventually search for a job in an office, but she soon realised how happy I was singing.

I have had many people influence my life - too many to write down. In the industry, the Pati brothers have had a massive impact on my career so far. As a fellow Pacific Islander reaching for the stars, I was inspired by the way they chase and grind for this career. This gave me confidence to continue in this art form because I see that if they can do it, I can do it too. I know it's cheesy but it's true. I’ve also had lessons with them both and they are diligent! They don’t let me settle for 'good enough'."

Anything else you’d like to mention that has shaped your experience in opera/singing environment?

"So, I have three brothers who are also aspiring opera singers. Having our one-on-one sessions at university and then coming home and talking about technique, breathing or even food are experiences I will always cherish. I’ve been told that it is a lonely career being a singer but I consider myself lucky to have these guys chasing the same dream. When we are together, music is always a good conversation. Talking with friends about singing over coffee whether they are musicians or not is valuable to my learning!"
